Musicians in the Arab world create improvisations with their melodic instruments. Using maqam modes, modulations, melodic trajectory and emotive storytelling, they create a musical excursion. It can stand alone, or be placed before (or within) a composition. Dancers can perform to a musician’s taqsim. The dancer too will improvise, following the melody, responding to the transitions, and connecting to the emotional journey. At its best, it becomes a cross discipline fully improvised duet. Karim Nagi, as a musician and dancer, has developed a clear system for communicating this crossover art form. His goal is to empower dancers to connect with the soul of the music, and enact their own unique creativity. Dancers and musicians are welcome.
The class will take place Live on Zoom on Sunday March 10 at 1pm NY time which is 6pm Rome, 10am Los Angeles. (Please note that in the USA this is the first day of Daylight Savings)
Afterwards, a recording of the class will be available to stream for 3 weeks.
